Chess Basics Explained
Chess is a two-player board game played on a square board with 64 alternating black and white squares.
Each player starts with:
- 8 pawns
- 2 knights
- 2 bishops
- 2 rooks
- 1 queen
- 1 king
Objective of the Game
Each player tries to checkmate the opponent’s king. A “check” is a threat to the king, and if the threat cannot be removed, it results in a checkmate, ending the game.
Game Phases & Rules
A game of chess has three phases:
Opening

Players take turns moving one piece at a time.
- White always starts and has a slight advantage in tournaments.
- White pieces are light-colored, while Black pieces are dark-colored.
The goal is to outmaneuver your opponent through calculated moves and strategy—capturing their pieces, defending your own, and seizing control of the board.
